Nanjing – A Symphony in Green
With its abundant natural resources and mild climate, Nanjing is a city where verdant landscapes flourish and the harmony of nature and humanity thrives.
Nanjing, a city steeped in history, unveils a picturesque tapestry of lush mountains, serene rivers and a commitment to ecological harmony. Across the changing seasons, the city’s vibrant greenery and remarkable achievements in environmental preservation captivate the hearts of its residents and visitors alike. Whether strolling along urban greenways or wandering through riverside parks, one cannot help but be enchanted by the natural splendour that defines life in Nanjing.
The “Green Nanjing” Initiative
Since launching the “Green Nanjing” strategy in 2002, the city has tirelessly pursued its vision of becoming an ecologically livable urban haven. Over the years, Nanjing has made remarkable strides in afforestation, wetland conservation and the development of green urban spaces. From the bustling city centre to suburban landscapes, parks and greenways interweave to form an extensive network, making “a view of green from every window and a park within walking distance” a daily reality for its residents.
Nestled in the lower Yangtze River basin, surrounded by mountains and intersected by the Qinhuai River, Nanjing is blessed with a naturally rich environment. By blending urban living with natural landscapes, the city has amplified its inherent charm. Urban forests, such as those at Zhongshan Mountain Forest Park and Tangshan Forest Park, infuse Nanjing with life and vitality. Today, the city boasts a green coverage rate of 44.96%, with 16.18 square metres of park space per capita - figures that far exceed national averages and establish Nanjing as a true “city of green.”
Wetlands and Biodiversity Conservation
Nanjing’s commitment to ecological preservation extends beyond urban greenery to safeguarding its precious wetlands. Each winter, wetland parks such as Xinji Zhou, Longpao and Lushuiwan transform into sanctuaries for thousands of migratory birds. These wetlands have become vital habitats for endangered species, including the Oriental stork, black-faced spoonbill, and Siberian crane, as well as the critically endangered Baer’s pochard.
Longpao Wetland Park, in particular, stands out as a haven for rare species like the reed parrotbill, often referred to as the “panda of the bird world.” Meanwhile, the Yangtze finless porpoise population along the Nanjing stretch of the Yangtze River is steadily growing, symbolising the city’s progress in restoring the river's ecosystem. Together with the verdant riverside landscapes, these wetlands form a unique tableau of Nanjing’s natural beauty.
A Vision of Clear Skies and Pristine Waters
In recent years, Nanjing has intensified its efforts to protect and enhance its environment, striving toward the goals of “bluer skies, clearer waters, and greener lands.” By implementing stringent environmental regulations, improving pollution control and elevating urban air quality, the city has transformed its ecological outlook.
The Qinhuai River, Xuanwu Lake and the Yangtze River in Nanjing have undergone remarkable ecological rejuvenation, providing idyllic spaces for relaxation and recreation. On a breezy spring day, standing on the eco-friendly embankments of the Yangtze, one can admire a vibrant mosaic of flowering greenery on both shores, with the river flowing endlessly—a scene reminiscent of a classical Chinese landscape painting. Nanjing’s harmonious integration of city, mountains, rivers, and forests has become the city’s most iconic hallmark.
The Future of a Greener Nanjing
With a forested area of 2.97 million mu (approximately 198,000 hectares) and a forest coverage rate of 31.95%, Nanjing has achieved net growth in forest resources for 19 consecutive years. Its wetland protection rate of 70.7% further underscores its ecological leadership, earning it accolades such as “National Garden City” and “National Forest City.”
Looking ahead, Nanjing remains steadfast in its pursuit of sustainable development, with initiatives ranging from expanding green spaces to conserving wetlands and restoring ecosystems. The city envisions an even greener future where urban life coexists seamlessly with natural beauty.
“Simply Green, Beautiful Nanjing”
This phrase encapsulates Nanjing’s current ecological achievements and its aspirations for the future. Here, mountains, rivers, cities and forests converge in harmonious splendour; modern life melds effortlessly with green living. Nanjing is not only a paragon of ecological preservation but also a beacon of livability - a city where its lush landscapes and vibrant biodiversity inspire a deep sense of peace and fulfillment. In protecting its green legacy, Nanjing sets a shining example for cities worldwide, standing proudly as a true model of environmental harmony.
